macOS Recovery is part of the built-in recovery system of your Mac. It can help you restore data from Time Machine, reinstall the operating system, get online help online, repair or erase a hard disk, and much more.
You can start up from macOS Recovery and use its utilities to recover from many types of software issues or take other actions on your Mac such as:

To use macOS Recovery, hold down Command (â)-R on your keyboard immediately after restarting your Mac or immediately after your Mac begins to restart. Continue holding the keys down until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe. Startup is complete when you see the utilities window.
You may have to enter a password, such as a firmware password or the password of the user whoâs an administrator of the Mac. A firmware password prevents starting up from any internal or external storage device other than the startup disk youâve selected. If you donât recall setting up such a password, well, you probably didnât.
After entering any required passwords, the macOS Utilities window should appear.
Youâll have four options: Restore From Time Machine Backup, Reinstall macOS, Get Help Online and Disk Utility.
If you used Time Machine to create a backup of your Mac (and you should do this), you can restore your files from that backup.
âReinstall macOSâ allows you to, as you might guess, download and reinstall the Mac operating system. The Reinstall macOS utility installs different versions of macOS depending on the key combination you used while starting up.
Newer Mac computers and some older Macs automatically try to start up from macOS Recovery over the Internet when unable to start up from the built-in recovery system. When that happens, you see a spinning globe instead of an Apple logo during startup.

macOS Catalina is Appleâs shiny new operating system for the Mac and itâs got a ton of great features and improvements. Youâre probably keen to get started and install it straight away. Before you do, consider whether you want to install it over the top of your current OS, or as a completely clean install of macOS Catalina. The benefits of the latter are that it will be like a completely new Mac, with all your settings wiped out, and junk files gone. It should make your Mac run faster. The rest of this article will explain how to clean install macOS Catalina.
Before the clean installation of macOS 10.15 Catalina itâs recommended that you first delete junk and dusty files from the current macOS. Hereâs how it works.
Backup your MacDisk Utility For Mac Catalina Drive
I canât stress how important this is. You must backup your Mac before you do anything else. Youâre going to be erasing your startup drive completely, so you need a complete backup of everything. You can use Time Machine, another backup app, or a cloning tool. Just make sure you have a complete, preferably bootable, copy of your current installation.
You should also make notes of settings for apps you use regularly â screen grabbing them is a good way to do that. And you should make sure you have a copy of any licence codes that youâll need when you reinstall applications. You can use Appleâs Notes app to make notes, as long as you sync them with iCloud.
Create a bootable installer of macOS Catalina
If youâre reading this after Catalina ships, you can download it from the Mac App Store and then choose Quit when the installation starts. If youâre clean installing the beta (and, by the way, thatâs not something I would recommend. Itâs much better to create a dual boot system when you run the beta.
Once you see âDoneâ in Terminal you can quit it. Your USB stick or external hard drive is now a bootable Catalina installer, so keep it safe. Now, itâs time to clean install macOS Catalina.

Once youâve set up your Mac, you can eject the installer disk and remove it. Remember to keep it safe. You can now restore files you backed up earlier from Time Machine or whichever backup tool you used. Remember to restore files and folders individually, donât, for example, restore your entire user directory otherwise youâll copy back all the junk files you just got rid of. Reinstall applications and go through them adding license details where necessary. Check that everything works as you expect it to and use the screen shots you made earlier to configure settings.
There are lots of good reasons why you might want to clean install macOS Catalina, but the most important one is that it should make your Mac feel like new and keep it running smoothly. For ultimate Mac refresh you can also download CleanMyMac X and play with its cleanup tools. Getting rid of old junk feels great.
